Balaclava Update

I made this balaclava while I was in the UK, for myself, and I was very delighted with it. I still am, but I have decided to list it for sale on Etsy.

Why? Well, first of all, I still have a lot of the yarn I used to make it, so I can always make another one for myself and anyway, it’s a long way until winter. But the real reason is that when I posted a picture of it to Flickr, I noticed something curious. Where all my other pictures got one, two, three, four views, the pictures of this one had twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine. Where all my other pictures were, in large part, not commented on, pictures of the balaclava drew a number of admiring comments from strangers! Someone even favorite-d it, but I think it might have been some horny guy with a mask fetish… oh dear.

Anyway, I’m hoping the balaclava phenomenon doesn’t boil down to horny guys with mask fetishes, because then it’s unlikely that it will be very successful on Etsy. But, I’m listing it up there as an experiment to see if there is indeed a market for balaclavas — maybe this could be my niche! And I could become a balaclava factory! Now this would be fun.

I’ll let you know how the experiment turns out!

Jil’s Handwarmers

AMENDMENT.  One more thing from the UK:

These I made for my sister. But here they are on my hands!

Here’s the flower close up, & there are more photographs on Flickr (this is true for most of my posts).

Crochet-hook Pouch

Here is a pouch I made for myself to keep my crochet hooks and tapestry needles in:

We went to a store in Glasgow and got lots of beautiful fabric remnants, so I used some of one of them as a lining.

The buttons, unfortunately, were quite old, so one of them (the far one, if you look closely) needed superglue almost as soon as it was sewn on.  I’ll get to that soon.

That’s it for the UK! I’ll post some more of what I’ve made since I’ve gotten back a little bit later.

Sofie’s Headband

Here is Sofie wearing this little headband I made her (to fit in with the hippies you see).

Aren’t her llama earrings the best thing in the world? (Yes, they are llamas.  I love llamas.)

Here is the headband close up:

Else’s Wallet-Pouch

Now we’re in Glasgow again, on that same night of hedonistic productivity. Here’s a pouch I made for Else:

This is me making it:

And this is it with her in the background!

Black, White, and Purple Squiggly Hat

Speaking of hats and trains, I started this one on the same train ride, but it wasn’t finished until Glasgow.

It resulted in my first crochet sale ever! Amazing!

Sam’s Hat

Backtracking chronologically a little bit, this hat for Sam started in London, and finished somewhere between York and Edinburgh.

Here it is in detail, or actually just zoomed in; I didn’t manage to really document it so much.

Sofie’s Credit Card Holder

sofie’s credit card holder, originally uploaded by shanecrochets.

I think this was the second of three little things I made in a very productive, drunken evening in Glasgow!

Black Sunglasses Case

Here are the sunglasses outside:

And here they are inside:

Black and Teal Ski Mask

I made this one between Cardiff and Llantwit.

You can call it whatever you want to — Ski-mask, bike-mask, balaclava, pasamontanas, bank-robber-mask…etc.

Here’s the eye-window in detail.

And here it is from the side!
